Filming has finally commenced on Doctor Who's 13th series.
Filming has began Jodie Whittaker's third series as the Doctor with strict safety protocols in place to protect cast and crew. However, because of the government guidelines the team are now vigorously following the series will consist of only eight episodes instead of 10 which has been the episode count for the previous two series. Although BBC Studios have announced that there will be "a total of eight episodes rather than the usual eleven" indicating that perhaps 2021 will be without a festive special.
On the subject of the new series and the difficulties and differences relating to filming, showrunner and executive producer Chris Chibnall said this, published on the official Doctor Who website.
“In this strangest of years, the Doctor Who production team have worked wonders to get the show back into production. We’re thrilled to be back making the show. Given the complexity of making Doctor Who, and with new and rigorous COVID working protocols, it’s going to take us a little longer to film each episode, meaning we expect to end up with eight episodes, rather than the usual eleven. But rest assured, the ambition, humour, fun and scares you expect from Doctor Who will all still be firmly in place. For everyone around the world, this is a challenging period — but the Doctor never shirks from a challenge!”
Although it may not be the complete normality of doctor who that we all hoped for returning to our screens next year, it's a big step forward knowing that the Doctor is coming.
Doctor Who returns this Christmas/New Year on BBC One and BBC iPlayer with Revolution of the Daleks.
