Revolution of the Daleks: 18:45, New Year's Day, BBC One

The BBC have now confirmed the air-date and time of this year's Doctor Who New Year's special. Revolution of the Daleks, the upcoming special of the series, will air on BBC One at 18:45 on New Year's Day in the UK and 8PM on BBC America in the US. The new episode stars Jodie Whittaker as the Doctor with Mandip Gill, Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole as her friends. However, It's not all good news as the BBC have also confirmed that this will be the last regular outing for Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole as Graham O'Brien and Ryan Sinclair as the their departure from the series is announced.

But re-joining the cast this time is Torchwood and Doctor Who star John Barrowman as he reprises his role as the much-loved Captain Jack Harkness. This return has been extremely well received by fans after many were left disappointed with Barrowman's series 12 cameo when Captain Jack met all three of the Doctor's companions over the course of the 50-minute episode, however teleported away before he could have his first adventure with Jodie Whittaker's Doctor.

Fans are hopeful that the upcoming 70-minute special will provide Captain Jack with a chance to be re-united with the Doctor. "Putting Jack’s coat on is like wearing an old coat," said John Barrowman, speaking to Doctor Who about returning to the role, "I know exactly who he is, I know exactly how he talks, I know exactly the way he delivers things... it changes my whole demeanour."

Also returning for the New Year's Special is, of course, the Daleks themselves! Although looking a little different this time, their main features remain much the same as they were when they first appeared on our screens way back in 1963. And, needless to say, their personalities are unaffected by their makeover. I think we can safely assume not everyone's going to make it out of the New Year's Special alive...

"It's deliberately different from those Daleks we've had on screen before," said Chris Chibnall, speaking to the Radio Times about the Dalek's redesign, "They light up at night with red lights for a start.

"There are just small, different details," Chris Chibnall goes on to say, "Like the number and shape of whatever you call those things on the side of the Daleks... And changes to little things adorning the Daleks - new slats and different layers around the dome."

Doctor Who: Revolution of the Daleks airs on BBC One at 18:45 on New Year's Day and will be available on BBC iPlayer shortly afterwards. Revolution of the Daleks airs at 8PM on BBC America in the US.
