Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall to resign after 2022 specials

Showrunner Chris Chibnall and series lead Jodie Whittaker have resigned from their respective roles, the BBC announced this week.

Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall will leave Doctor Who next year.

After making a 'three series and out' pact in 2017, Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall will be stepping down from their roles on Doctor Who as filming on their last episodes wrap next month. After a series of specials next year, the 13th Doctor will regenerate in autumn 2022 when a special episode will be broadcast to coincide with the BBC's centenary. Whilst no official statement has been made regarding the casting of the 14th Doctor speculation has been relentless over the past few months since news of Whittaker's exit was leaked to the press in January.

In a statement published on the official Doctor Who website, incumbent Showrunner Chris Chibnall said: "Jodie's magnificent, iconic Doctor has exceeded all our high expectations. She's been the gold standard leading actor, shouldering the responsibility of being the first female Doctor with style, strength, warmth, generosity and humour.

"She captured the public imagination and continues to inspire adoration around the world, as well as from everyone on the production. I can’t imagine working with a more inspiring Doctor – so I’m not going to!"

Jodie Whittaker said: “In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life. And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories. We knew that we wanted to ride this wave side by side, and pass on the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I’ve learnt forever."

The news comes less than a week after both Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall appeared at San Diego Comic Con @Home on a Doctor Who panel to promote the upcoming series. There, it was also revealed that, for the first time since 1986, there would be only one story in the next series of Doctor Who.

The one-story series will be the Doctor's 'biggest adventure yet'.

It will also be the shortest series of Doctor Who ever.

Series 13 will be followed by three specials set to air in 2022. The first will air on New Year's Day, the second will follow sometime in the spring and, at BBC One's request, an additional feature-length special will air in autumn 2022. This will mark both the 13th Doctor's final episode and the 100th anniversary of the BBC.
