Russell T Davies returns as Doctor Who showrunner as Chris Chibnall prepares to step down

Fans were shocked earlier this week when the heard the news that former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies would be returning to the role as incumbent showrunner Chris Chibnall prepares to resign from the position. 

Davies was the showrunner from 2005-2010 and was responsible for reviving the show after its sixteen-year-long hiatus. He oversaw Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's tenure on the show and was responsible for casting both.

Since leaving Doctor Who, Davies has been writing and creating many popular TV drama series such as Cucumber, Years and Years and, It's a Sin, which recently won Best New Drama at the National Television Awards. Davies is now considered on of the most prestigious television writers of the 21st century.


Incumbent showrunner Chris Chibnall said it was "monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him."

The showrunner won't be the only thing changing for series 14. Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter's production company responsible for critically acclaimed dramas such as His Dark Materials, A Discovery of Witches and I Hate Suzie starring Doctor Who's Billie Piper. 

In an  official statement release on the official Doctor Who website Russell T Davies said: “I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now.”

Davies will resume the position of showrunner after Chris Chibnall has formally left the role. His first episode will air in 2023 and will also be a 60th anniversary special for the show. 

Doctor Who returns later this year to BBC One and iPlayer in the UK. Russell T Davies's first episode will air in November 2023 on BBC One and iPlayer.
