The BBC have today released a trailer and release date for the upcoming series of Doctor Who. The highly anticipated series will begin airing on BBC One from 31st October. The release date was accompanied by a trailer that revealed the return of classic villains such as the Sontarans and Weeping Angels. This comes less than 24 hours after Doctor wiped all their social media accounts.
In a statement published on the Doctor Who website, showrunner Chris Chibnall said: “There were two ways you could go: Doing lots of tiny episodes in one room with no monsters, or we can throw down the gauntlet and do the biggest story we’ve ever done.”
Earlier this year, Chibnall announced the new series would only consist of six episodes, all of which would for one six-part story, entitled Flux, it has now been revealed. The series will be followed by three specials set to air next year.
Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker said “This feels so precious and so fun because of what we’ve all come out of... Whatever huge emotional challenges we go through, I’m lucky that I can throw that into the Doctor, because it’s always required for the Doctor.
“In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life. And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories."
Series 13 will be current showrunner Chris Chibnall and current Doctor Jodie Whittaker last full series after their resignation was announced in July. Their final episode is set to air next year as part of the BBC's centenary celebrations.
