David Tennant is the 14th Doctor

In an unexpected twist, 10th Doctor actor David Tennant has been announced as the next Doctor.

The Fourteenth Doctor

David Tennant has been revealed as the next actor to take on the role of the Doctor following the Thirteenth Doctor's regeneration. Tennant originally portrayed the tenth incarnation of the Time Lord from 2005 to 2010. He is returning alongside showrunner Russell T Davies who served as showrunner throughout the entirety of Tennant's original run on the show.

The Tenth Doctor actor's return was confirmed by the BBC in May but fans initially believed Tennant's return to be only a guest appearance as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who's 60th Anniversary special set to air next year.

Rumours soon began to spread and when Tennant was spotted on set in a new costume outside the Thirteenth Doctor's Tardis fans were quick to speculate on what the reason for these anomalies could be with many guessing that Tennant would in fact be playing the next incarnation of the Doctor, rather than his much loved tenth incarnation.

Fans soon discovered that Tennant's role in the anniversary celebrations was much bigger than anyone originally anticipated as it became apparent that what was at first thought to be a small guest role in one episode was in fact a three episode epic led by Tennant.

However, David Tennant himself was dismissive of the rumours that he would be the Fourteenth Doctor, insisting in a Radio Times interview earlier this month that "Ncuti Gatwa will be the next Doctor Who". It seems he was determined to keep the details of his return a secret as even last night when a fan informed Tennant they were hoping he would appear at the end of the Power of the Doctor following the Thirteenth Doctor's regeneration he once again confirmed this would not be the case.

Viewer's were left shocked on Sunday night when, despite denying the rumours on multiple occasions, David Tennant did indeed show up as Jodie Whittaker's successor, with the BBC quickly confirming Tennant was set to appear in three specials next year as the Fourteenth Doctor.

In an interview with BBC News, David Tennant described his return to the show as "a complete joy from start to finish".

"It's like being given the loveliest present. And I'm very, very excited." said Tennant, "I'm thrilled and I hope people will enjoy the stories we've got to tell."

David Tennant stars as the Fourteenth Doctor in Doctor Who from November 2023 on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK.
