Doctor Who: What will the BBC's new deal with Disney+ mean for international fans?

The BBC announced on Tuesday that they had struck a deal with Disney+ which gave the streaming giant exclusive rights to the broadcast of future episodes of Doctor Who outside of the UK. This decision did not receive a warm reception from overseas fans, however, with many vowing to give up on the show instead of subscribing to Doctor Who's new "global home".

Will future episodes of Doctor Who still be broadcast on TV stations outside of the UK such as BBC America?

Unfortunately, all episodes of Doctor Who going forwards will premiere exclusively on Disney+ meaning any fans hoping to catch the show on regular TV are out of luck.

This means many international broadcasters with whom the BBC had been partners for several years found themselves passed over in favour of the streaming service, losing a show which has been a staple of their science fiction schedule for years.

Will I still be able to watch past episodes on other streaming services?

Currently, the BBC has not commented on whether the exclusive deal includes past episodes as well but it's safe to assume that under the current circumstances streaming services other than Disney+ will not be streaming future episodes.

Will Doctor Who DVDs and Blu-Rays still be released outside of the UK?

So far the BBC has not said it will stop releasing DVDs and Blu-Rays internationally, however, with Disney Branded Television now holding the exclusive rights to the show outside the UK, they may not be so keen to release home media in the future, leaving fans with no other option than to subscribe.

Will Disney+ be streaming past episodes as well?

Disney's deal only includes upcoming episodes of Doctor Who with no mention of existing episodes. It would make sense for Disney+ to host the full collection of Doctor Who, but it seems for now at least viewers will have to look elsewhere for past series.

Will Doctor Who feature commercial breaks on Disney+?

Earlier this year, Disney+ announced they were launching a new subscription tier where there would run ads on shows. The new plan is set to launch in the US in December for the same price subscribers a paying for a regular Disney+ account today. The ad-free version will cost customers an extra $3 a month while the content on both plans remains the same.

Will Doctor Who be available on Disney+ in the UK?

No, Doctor Who will continue to be aired on BBC One in the UK with no plans for the streaming platform to aquire any future episodes. BBC iPlayer will also continue to host past and future episodes of the show.

Doctor Who begins premiering on Disney+ globally and BBC One in the UK in November 2023.
